Designing the Gravity tool/Weapon
Initially, we wanted our game to be from a third-person top-down perspective, but we made some design changes based on the gameplay we planned to implement. Because of this, we started on a proper hand and weapon model pretty late.
We now needed a detailed weapon model for the game.
The concept designs for the weapon:
For the first design, I decided to put air canisters into the design and added a scope at the end of the gun. Looking at this design now, I'm glad our team didn't go for the gun with a random unless scope.
The second design was my personal favorite, with a sleek frame and a liquid container at the end of the gun. However, having liquid at the end of the gun wouldn't have made much sense.
The third design had a more fragmented look to it. It has a bulky fragmented design to it. I also added something that looks like a radiator towards the barrel.
The fourth design has a smaller frame and some tubing. My intention with this design was to make it more cartoonish and small. Some people in the team had taken some liking to it, but not as much as the last design.
The fifth design was made because a team member had mentioned that they were interested in seeing a more realistic gun barrel for the gravity gun. Other than that, I added some tubing and stuck to a more simple design.
The fifth design was the design that our team decided they liked the most. Because of that, I went and started modeling the weapon.
A simple base model of the weapon based on the concept sketches:
After starting to model this gun, I realized something that I should've realized sooner. The overall design of the gun looked too flimsy with only glass in the center of the gun. Because of that, I later decided to add support in the center of the gun. Since this gun will have two jobs, I also changed the design of the gun to have two nozzles instead of one. I also added some more details to the final gun model which you can see below.
